Why fixing the post-click experience is the single best way to make your media dollars work harder
Bridging the post-click gap: Why your paid ads need better landing pages to work.
In modern day marketing, time and attention is mostly focused on campaign set up – refining audiences, testing creative and experimenting with AI tools. That work matters, but without a strong landing page behind it, it can’t pay off.
Sending hard-won, high-intent traffic to a generic homepage or a cluttered product page is one of the most common and costly mistakes in paid media. When a landing page doesn’t immediately deliver on the ad’s promise, visitors leave, and the budget spent to bring them there is wasted.
The State of Paid Media ROI report from Unbounce and Ascend2 shows how costly this mistake can be: 62% of marketers who send paid traffic to standard home pages admit they fail to hit their ROI goals. The takeaway is clear. Fixing the post-click experience is the single biggest lever for making your media dollars work harder.
The Numbers Behind the Disconnect
Even as budgets get tighter and teams face more pressure to prove results, most marketing teams keep pouring resources into the top of the funnel while ignoring where that traffic lands.
According to the study:
- 53% of marketers send paid traffic to general pages instead of dedicated destinations (with 25% sending paid ads straight to their homepage, and 28% sending traffic to broad category pages).
- Only 31% of marketers invested in landing page optimizations over the past six months, compared to heavy spending on pre-click initiatives like audience research (40%), AI tools (39%) and ad creative (38%).
This means that even the most strategically targeted ad can’t be saved from a frustrating website experience.
When someone clicks an ad expecting a specific answer or product, landing on a broad homepage forces them to search for the answer themselves. Today’s customers rarely explore a website in depth. When they can’t find what they need immediately, they leave, increasing your cost per acquisition and resulting in lost revenue.
Why the Destination Is Your Secret Weapon
Treating your landing pages as an afterthought puts a cap on how well your ads can perform. But when you match the landing page directly to the ad that brought the user there, your entire media budget can become extremely more efficient.
The same Unbounce report mentioned above found that marketing teams that are confident in their post-click experience are more than 4x as likely to hit their ROI targets compared to teams that ignore it.
Additionally, while 86% of marketers use AI for things like ad copy or image generation, only 19% have reported using it to build or optimize their landing pages. That leaves a massive opportunity for brands willing to focus on the full user journey.
What Marketers Should Do Next
If you want to drive more return out of your existing ad spend (without throwing more money into platforms), Collective Measures recommends the following steps:
- Match your message: The headline, offer and visuals on your landing page should immediately mirror the ad the user clicked. When the messaging matches, people trust the page faster and are far more likely to convert.
- Align the intent: Where someone is coming from before visiting your website also matters. The same expectation for a user from a branded search should not be the same for a user coming from a social prospecting audience.
- Make page testing a habit: Optimization doesn’t only exist in the ad platforms. A simple, consistent habit of testing different page experiences (headlines, copy, form length, imagery, layouts, etc.) will yield steady conversion gains that improve your paid media efficiency over time.
